The Phoenix Suns have some questions going into the 2023-24 season, even after the crazy trades and moves we saw last year. The Kevin Durant trade keeps them as one of the best teams in the Western Conference. The Bradley Beal trade made them one of the best teams in the league. In a way, they have a dream team, you could say.
But, as we said, they still have questions. We know they can have one of the best lineups in the league because they have what many call the “big four” with Devin Booker, Deandre Ayton, Durant, and Beal.
The biggest question, aside from what depth players like Jock Landale will have to leave, is who will be the fifth man every night. We know the fifth best player on the roster is, but Josh Okogie may not always fit into the starting lineup.
Recently, new head coach Frank Vogel gave some insight into what he plans to do with the final spot in the starting lineup.
“I think the one that fits the best, actually,” Vogel said when asked who is that fifth man. “We have a lot of guys who have the opportunity to be the fifth guy.
“The versatility of maybe being able to guard multiple positions, or maybe it’s an elite shooter. Maybe it’s just a playmaker,” said Vogel.
Vogel is a guy we’ve seen coach at the highest level. He has won a championship before with the Los Angeles Lakers, and for people who want to use LeBron James as an excuse for that, he has played in the Eastern Conference Finals twice with the Indiana Pacers.
Vogel, with those teams, is very good at adjusting to what the opposing team has based on the lineups he wants to use. His ability to adjust is one of the best in the NBA. We can see many different lineups used, whether Okogie, Damien Lee, or even Bol Bol.
Regardless of the lineup in that game, Suns fans should have confidence in their new head coach.
