Rory McIlroy Wants Not To Play Justin Thomas In Ryder Cup

The debate over whether or not Justin Thomas should receive a captain’s pick for a spot on the US Ryder Cup team has found its way to Team Europe leader Rory McIlroy. To say that McIlroy is a fan of JT’s might be putting things a bit mildly because, in his opinion, Thomas more than deserves his controversial choice of captain.

Thomas is coming off a very disappointing and inconsistent season on the PGA Tour. He missed the cut in three of the four major championships that year and did not qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Despite Thomas being in a real and obvious slump, McIlroy believes making him on the US team was a “no brainer” decision for team captain Zach Johnson.

Rory McIlroy Doesn’t Want To Be A Part Of Justin Thomas In The Ryder Cup

Not only that, the four-time major winner has hinted at the fact that he and many of his European teammates would prefer not to face Thomas in Italy later this month.

“I felt the conversation around [Thomas being selected as a captain’s pick] was completely unjustified,” said McIlroy recently Subpar Podcast. “Because, in my opinion, being a European and knowing that I have to face some of these guys, there are actually other guys on that team that I would rather face than JT. So, for me it’s a no-brainer… “JT is still one of the first guys you put on that tee sheet for the US”

Thomas has been a cold killer over the course of his two Ryder Cup appearances in his career posting an overall record of 6-2-1 including a 2-0 record in singles. Thomas got the best of McIlroy in their singles match in 2018 before dominating Tyrrell Hatton 4&3 in 2021.

Thomas is also 10-3-2 all-time in the Presidents Cup proving that when he represents his country, he flips a switch.

Perhaps this is McIlroy playing a bit of reverse psychology and he has already informed European team captain Luke Donald that he wants Thomas to have another shot at the Ryder Cup this year, but based on Thomas’ impressive resume, it very doubtful.
