In an interview with Mark Medina of Sportskeeda, Gabe Vincent said he was not angry about that Lakers coach Darwin Ham already selected D’Angelo Russell as his starting point guard. Vincent is only a few months removed from starting the Heat in the NBA Finals, but he is ready to accept a reserve role with his new team.
“That’s something D Ham should worry about,” Vincent said. “I am not the coach. I didn’t put a lineup. I just go out there and do my job. I’m going to do whatever it takes to help this team win games and help this organization win games. As I have seen before, every night does not look the same. With that big picture in mind to try to help us win, I will wear any hat necessary.
LA signed Vincent to a three-year contract worth $33MM, so he’s clearly in the team’s plans even if he doesn’t start right away. Vincent has several options in free agency, but he likes the idea of playing for Ham because they have similar backgrounds.
“I think this is generally his route,” Vincent said. “I think there are some similarities between me and him in terms of that and his journey. He spent some time in the G League like I did. There are some similarities that we naturally have, even when we sit down and talk about the game and catch up. It’s seamless. We get along. D Ham is great. He’s very genuine. That’s why I really appreciated him early in this process.”
