Ohio high school golfers sink back-to-back holes-in-one

St. Charles junior Jonas Borland, left, and Thomas Worthington senior Will Reis made back-to-back holes-in-one on Thursday on the 188-yard, par-3 No. 12 holes at Worthington Hills.

The St. Charles and Thomas Worthington boys golf teams may not have an ace on the hole in the Division I postseason, but they have golfers who ace the same hole.

In a practice round Thursday at Worthington Hills, St. Charles junior Jonas Borland and Thomas Worthington senior Will Reis made back-to-back holes-in-one on the 188-yard, par-3 No. 12 holes.

It was the third career hole-in-one for Borland, who made it with a 6-iron. He recorded his other two at SportsOhio’s Golf Center last year and Tartan Fields in 2020.

“I hit it hard and it kind of bounced and started rolling toward the pin,” Borland said. “I thought it was going to be a really good moment and it went in. We started going crazy. We were running around. Everyone in the group was so excited. We thought no one would ever do it again and then Will stepped up to second and put it in and we were in complete disbelief.

“They’re all special, but this one has got to be probably the coolest I’ve ever thought of doing back-to-back shots.”

It was the first hole-in-one for Reis, who used a 5-iron.

“I never thought I’d be doing it right after,” Reis said. “It was crazy. It will be fun to celebrate with my friends there.”

Thomas sophomore Jack Marsh almost made it three in a row, but his drive “hit the cup and it came out,” Reis said.

Thomas junior Jack Flores rounded out the foursome.

According to National Hole-in-One Registrythe odds of two players from a four acing the same hole 17 million to 1.

All four players will compete in sectionals this week. St. Charles is seeded fifth in the Central District and will play in the Darby Creek sectional Tuesday, while sixth-seeded Thomas will compete in the EagleSticks sectional Wednesday.

“It definitely gave me a little more confidence and a little more momentum going into the sectional,” Reis said.

The top three teams and the top three individuals not on qualifying teams from each of the four Division I sectionals will advance to district on Oct. 10 in Apple Valley.
