Golfer Tyrrell Hatton was involved in a cringy exchange with a PGA Tour official who tried to update him on his FedEx Cup standings. The awkward interaction immediately went viral, leading to a backlash from golf fans online.

Hatton didn’t seem interested in hearing the update after a poor round on the course. To his surprise, he made the cut as a Top 30 performer, meaning there was plenty of golf to play.

Hatton concluded his most recent PGA Tour event on Sunday at Olympia Fields in Illinois. Unfortunately, he shot one in his final round, putting his postseason in jeopardy.

To make the Tour Championship, golfers must finish in a Top 30 standing. From there, they are seeded for the playoff tournament.

The No. 1 player Scottie Scheffler, for example, will start the championship tournament at -10 while the No. 30 player Sepp Straka will start with even par.

Hatton entered this final weekend fighting for one of the final spots and the hope of keeping his season alive. His subpar Sunday, however, put that goal in jeopardy.

True, he was not happy with the ending.

Fortunately, Hatton just made it through the field, finishing the weekend at No. 28 in the standings. That’s good news for him because he’s guaranteed a $500,000 payout even if he finishes last in the FedEx Cup field next week.

After learning that Hatton was likely to break into the Top 30, the PGA Tour sent an official to update Hatton with the good news. The player doesn’t seem very interested in chatting.

The hilariously awkward exchange led to a huge backlash on social media as many in the golf world reposted the clip along with hilarious captions.

Hatton’s spirits seemed to be higher later Sunday night as he was confirmed to advance to the FedEx Cup Championship.

“Tense finish yesterday,” he wrote on Twitter. “Happy to make it through Atlanta for the Tour Championship.”

We’ll see if there’s any more excitement for Hatton next week.
