Canada Basketball announced on Wednesday that Jamal Murray, an NBA champion with the Denver Nuggets, will not participate in the upcoming 2023 FIBA World Cup.
“When I entered the training camp, I wanted to check how my body would respond after a long and difficult season and whether I would be physically able to compete at the highest required level for the World Cup. After consultations with the medical staff and the team, it became clear that I needed more time for recovery. Therefore, I had to make the difficult decision of not participating in the tournament. Representing Canada at the Olympics remains my dream, and I will support the team on their journey as they pursue this goal,said Murray.
Canada has assembled a highly competitive team that includes NBA players such as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and RJ Barrett under the leadership of coach Jordi Fernandez. However, the loss of their biggest star will undoubtedly affect their quest for their first ever World Cup medal.
“After many discussions over the past few weeks with Jamal and the team’s medical staff, it has become apparent that further recovery and rehabilitation will prevent Jamal from joining our team for the upcoming FIBA Men’s Basketball. World Cup,” explained Rowan Barrett, General Manager / Executive Vice-President of the Senior Men’s Program.

Canada is placed in Group H and is set to face France, Lebanon, and Latvia during the Group Phase in Jakarta, Indonesia.
