Negotiating Nick Bosa’s record contract extension wasn’t easy for 49ers general manager John Lynch and the front office.
The reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year’s 44-day contract holdout ended Wednesday and the star defensive end put pen to paper Friday morning.
After Bosa officially signed his record five-year, $170 million extension, Lynch joined “Murph & Mac” on KNBR 680 Friday morning where he discussed the complex process. Lynch was asked if there were times he had to manage his emotions and not take things personally during the frustrating negotiations, and admitted it was difficult, but received advice from former Golden State Warriors GM and close friend Bob Myers.
“I’d be lying if human nature didn’t kick in,” Lynch said. “Nick is well represented by a talented agent. He’s tough, he’s aggressive. I’ll say one day we’ll be here, and it’s not down to his agent, but a little shoutout to Bob Myers who my best friend. point we were in a mess. Bob called and Paraag Marathe happened to be in my office and the advice was really good. Sometimes you need an outside perspective and I think it kept us going .
“There are many people and I don’t want to undervalue the internal [discussions], so many people are working on it… but I am very grateful, you need friends when you are struggling. I thought about that last night, at a time when we were frustrated, Bob called and had a very good vision.”
Lynch shared that the chaos in the 24 hours before the agreement ended in the language of the contract, instead of the final numbers, but the two sides were able to clear the obstacle and come to an agreement.
“The language the last 24 hours,” Lynch revealed. “You finish these things and then it’s like OK … everything gets leaked these days, and I believe — I’m not throwing shade — but whatever happened, that got leaked and you still have to go through the language. And in a historic contract like this, there’s some parsing of all that. There’s a little delay there at the end of that. Before that, it’s just everything. Perfect. “
If anyone knows a thing or two about negotiating lucrative contracts, it’s Myers, who has negotiated with players like Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and many others. more players in his 11 seasons as GM of the Warriors.
After stepping down from his Golden State position in May, it appears Myers will play a role in helping keep the Bay’s biggest stars around for years to come.
