Jets training camp: Assistant coach hospitalized after catching ‘friendly fire’ during joint practice skirmish

New York Jets senior defensive assistant/cornerbacks coach Tony Oden left practice on a cart after he fell on the sideline during Wednesday’s joint session with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to ESPN. Head coach Robert Saleh told reporters that Oden went to the hospital afterward got a little “friendly fire” during the match between the two teams, and that he is expected to be good.

Oden was seen kneeling after the fight began to die down, according to an account from SNYtv. Medical staff tended to him for a few moments as the cart was carried away. The players knelt, but Oden reportedly walked under his own power before riding back to the locker room in the front seat.

The Cleveland native spent 20 years at NFL as an assistant coach, including the past four with Robert Saleh in San Francisco and now New York.

It’s common for fights to break out, especially among linemen, during mixed practices. It’s a more private setting than the actual games and it’s usually a break from beating up on their own teammates on other days of training camp. Combined practices are happened all over the country in the month of August.

A week ago, the Jets took part in joint practices with the Carolina Panthers leading up to their preseason opener. They host Tampa Bay in Week 2 of the preseason Saturday at 7:30 pm ET.
