Former NFL wide receiver Mike Williams has died at the age of 36 from injuries he suffered in a tragic accident at a construction site, it has been reported.
The Syracuse college star, who played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs in five years in the NFL, called time on his football career in 2016.
He earned a total of $11,848,250 during his NFL season, most of which came from the Chiefs, who drafted him in the fourth round in 2010 and gave him a four-year contract.
It was reported that Williams had been working at a construction site in recent weeks, where he suffered a fatal accident.
His death was first reported by Buffalo Bills beat reporter Jon Scott, who confirmed the news to multiple sources.
More details were revealed on a GoFundMe page, said to have been set up by Williams’ father, Wendell Muhammed.
The page – which was originally set up before his death in a bid to help Williams’ father travel to a hospital in Tampa, Florida – claims that a steel beam fell on his head, causing a massive head injury.
Williams’ father went on to explain that the former NFL star suffered from swelling of his brain and spinal cord, as well as complete paralysis of his right arm and below the waist.
The post went on to say that he died on September 1 after having difficulty breathing due to the accident, before doctors discovered water in his lungs and then put him in an induced coma on September 3.
Williams’ father said in the post that doctors were scheduled to try and revive him on September 6, but it has since been reported that he died of his injuries.
Prior to his professional football career, Williams was a college star with Syracuse, where he played for three seasons.
In his NFL career, he made 223 receptions, scored 26 touchdowns with 3,089 receiving yards.
