No, the NFL does not condone fights during joint practices. And the NFL doesn’t care, until someone is seriously injured.
On Wednesday, a Commanders player was injured during joint practices with the Ravens.
According to a league source, Washington cornerback Danny Johnson injured a rotator cuff when Baltimore tight end Mark Andrews knocked him to the ground.
It’s the kind of move that could have gotten Andrews in real trouble during a game. But because the NFL doesn’t care what happens at the practice combine, Andrews doesn’t experience real results. That does not provide a real deterrent to any other player who may be inclined to throw someone to the ground or throw a punch or shake a helmet during joint practices.
The NFL needs to pay attention to this matter. As explained earlier, the league does not. And it doesn’t happen until someone is seriously injured. Then, the league will be quick to change and/or implement the policies and procedures that should be applied to the league.
