Nicolas Jarry withdraws from Cincinnati Open despite opening win, returns to Chile with wife due to give birth

Nicolás Jarry announced the withdrawal from the second round of the Cincinnati Open for the birth of his second child.

Chilean tennis player Nicolás Jarry announced his withdrawal from the second round of the Cincinnati Open to travel back to Chile for the birth of his second child.

Jarry was one of the surprises of the year, capturing two ATP 250 titles and breaking into the top 30 for the first time in his career after starting the year outside the top 100.

At the age of 27, Nicolás Jarry experienced the peak of his career. This week, he participated in the Cincinnati Open and made a successful debut by coming from behind to defeat Russian player Roman Safiulin with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Jarry announced through his Instagram stories that he will be traveling to Chile to attend the birth of his second child, so he is leaving the tournament:

“Dear friends, today I have to withdraw from the Cincinnati tournament due to personal reasons, in order to fly to Chile and be with my wife when our second child arrives. I will return to the US Open with a bigger that enthusiasm. to finish the year. Thank you so much for your support,” he wrote.

An unusual situation occurred in his draw section, as Jarry’s next opponent was supposed to be the winner of the match between Karen Khachanov and Andy Murray. However, both players withdrew from the tournament, leading to the entry of two lucky losers in the main draw: Alexei Popyrin and Daniel Altmaier.

Popyrin claimed the victory with a score of 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4. When Jarry withdrew, Popyrin directly advanced to the third round. Even before the completion of the matches in the first round, Popyrin has secured a place in the top 16 and will await his opponent from the match between Andrey Rublev and Emil Ruusuvuori.

With this improvement, the 24-year-old tennis player is currently at his career-best ranking in the live standings, sitting at world No. 51.

Despite his departure, Jarry also experienced a rise, at least in the live ranking, where he stood as world No. 23, just two weeks before the start of the US Open.
